The Minnesota Vikings clearly entered the 2021 offseason with a plan to rebuild their defense. After seeing its worst performance in the Mike Zimmer era in 2020, all the key additions through free agency came on that side of the ball.
As the team sits two weeks into OTAs they haven’t shown signs of slowing down in free agency. They acquired another depth piece in their secondary earlier this week with the Tye Smith signing, but they added another piece that will likely play a bigger role on Friday.
Two weeks ago, Bashaud Breeland was in Minnesota for a visit. It took some time, but the two sides agreed to terms on Friday making the Vikings’ secondary even stronger.
Breeland has played in 94 games throughout his career totaling 376 tackles, 14 interceptions, eight forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries. The seven-year veteran spent the last two seasons with the Chiefs and played a vital role in bringing them a Lombardi Trophy two years ago. He intercepted Jimmy Garoppolo and led the team in tackles in Super Bowl LIV.
With the Jeff Gladney situation still up in the air it was obvious the Vikings still needed some depth at the position. Zimmer may finally have his secondary back to his liking, as it seems as if the unit is deeper than it has been the last few seasons.
A secondary with Harrison Smith, Patrick Peterson, Cameron Dantzler, Xavier Woods and Mackensie Alexander looked like one of the league’s top team units. Throwing in Breeland, along with a potential emergence of Harrison Hand or Kris Boyd, and the Vikings defense looks ready to ride in 2021.
