The Carolina Panthers are on the verge of hiring Norv Turner as their offensive coordinator, according to an ESPN report on Wednesday.
The Panthers also are set to hire Turner's son, Scott, as quarterbacks coach. He is currently the quarterbacks coach at the University of Michigan on head coach Jim Harbaugh's staff.
The Turners would replace Mike Shula as offensive coordinator and Ken Dorsey as quarterbacks coach. Both were fired Tuesday by the Panthers.
The 65-year-old Norv Turner was last employed by the Minnesota Vikings. He left the team during the 2016 season and last out in 2017.
Two other Turner relatives are also part of the Panthers' coaching staff. His brother, Ron, is an offensive consultant and his nephew, Scott Turner, is as assistant quarterbacks coach. Scott Turner previously was the team's quality control coach.
Carolina head coach Ron Rivera apparently was looking for assistants who could help the development of quarterback Cam Newton, who has 41 touchdown passes but 30 interceptions the past two seasons.
"I think Cam's got room for improvement," Rivera said. "There's room for growth, and he showed some growth this year and made some big steps."
Norv Turner has a wealth of coaching experience, serving as offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys (1991-1993), Chargers (2001), Miami Dolphins (2002-2003), Oakland Raiders (2004-2005), San Francisco 49ers (2006), Cleveland Browns (2013), and Minnesota Vikings (2014-2016).
Turner also has been a head coach with the Washington Redskins from 1994 to 2000 and the Chargers from 2007 to 2012.
The Panthers finished the 2017 season with an 11-5 record, losing in the playoffs to the New Orleans Saints.
ESPN reported that Turner was to meet with Rivera and other members of the organization on Wednesday night.
A formal announcement of Turner's hiring is expected soon.
