Play-by-play, Vikings football
Host, Vikings Live @ Winter Park
AKA: P.A., VOX
With the FAN since: 1997
Most memorable FAN moment: Tough bit because we work at a place where memories are made frequently. hmmm?
For me it was when I was given the Viking's play-by-play job. It was into the 2002 season and I had lost it twice before Dan Seeman, Mick Anselmo and Doug Westerman hired me for good.
The first time is when KFAN landed the Vikes (2001) and I auditioned for it and lost to Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton, who according to some was as easy to work with as Fran Foley.
I was gracious in defeat and he subsequently was fired.
So, the Vikes contact me to call the Pittsburgh preseason game on one day's notice and i do. They liked it and asked me one 2001 summer day as I was leaving the 'Fair to head to winter park, we want you to be the play-by-play voice of the Vikings. I'm like, "hell, yeah, here we go!."
Phone rings five minutes later and it's former Vike's VP Mike Kelly telling me to hold on and he'll get back to me. I knew there was a problem.
Longstorylonger, Red McCombs opted to hire his best friend's son and jettison me. Diseased. In for a minute then out in a flash. Dreams, dead!
Handled it with aplomb, though, and Terry Stembridge was dismissed after the 2001 season, and I landed the job.
When Mr. Seeman told me I had the job and a two-year contract I almost burst into tears I felt so good.
Several years later I still think about how the whole thing transpired. Now I smile.
The best movie scene of all-time is : Gary Oldman as "Dracula" over Winona Ryder (Madame 'Mina) proclaiming, "I have crossed oceans of time to find you." very emotional. Might be the greatest pick-up line ever uttered.
If everybody at the FAN was locked in a house, reality show style, who would be the first to get kicked out?: Morris because he would eat all the food and become gassy.
What is the best feature of KFAN.com?: I like Bump's Blog, I like the reaction to the columns, too. Sometimes bloggers bug me because people take what they say too seriously and many lack credibility. This blogging bit came out of nowhere. Meanwhile, Barreiro is a nationally recognized columnist who writes for our website. That's an absolute treat.
What is your favorite button bar drop of all time?: "Puffy" because of all the unique places you can put it.
Who is your favorite FAN caller of all time: Tough call. Chris From Brooklyn Park is cool. We have had it out several times but get along very well now. This Pastor from Grand Forks Jeremy calls and loves everything Atlanta. He's very smart when it comes to football and I appreciate that. He's also spiritually sound, which impresses me.
When you are done at the FAN what will you be doing?: Calling races at Canterbury for sure. Hopefully wintering in the Carribean, Maybe calling football/basketball games nationally on the radio. I don't know.
And in closing...: This is a tremendous place to work. It has been fun being here for nearly nine years and we all get along better than people might think. Working with Jeff is a treat and we look forward to many more years of the P.A. and Dubay Show. Thanks so much for listening.
