Minneapolis, MN - Tuesday afternoon saw Gophers Football Coach Jerry Kill take to the stand for the first time this season as his squad prepares to kick off their preseason training program this coming Friday. Littered among the regular preseason coaches comments, Kill shared some of his thoughts on the upcoming season which include higher expectations from a team that is slowly (and finally) gaining some much needed veteran leadership.
Below is a selection of quote from Kill's press conference which can be viewed in it's entirety by clicking the image above...
On the 2013 season, "Our expectations are to be better. We've got to keep moving the program forward. What that is and how that takes place, we'll see."
On backup QB Mitch Leidner, 'The spring scrimmage, you put guys in [game-like] situations. I think when Mitch started the Spring Scrimmage he was a little bit nervous, but once he settled down they went toe-to-toe and we had a heck of a ball game going there. I think Mitch is like a lot of our whole team is. It's a little bit young and a little unexperienced but sometimes that's good, they don't know any better."
On the QB battle, "Depth is important at that position and I think we figured all of that out using three centers and three quarterbacks and still making it to a bowl game."
On his plans to split time at the QB position, "You don't want your starter getting hit all the time. If there's a deal where you can sprinkle somebody in there, then that helps you later on down the road...Do I want to flip with the quarterbacks? No," Kill said. "Is there a place and time (to play them) like we utilized Jordan Lynch and Chandler Harnish? Yes, according to what is happening in that particular game plan."
