After starting on the Texans for this huge road test Sunday there's no doubt JJ WATT is the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year. These stats on him are some of the most amazing I have seen in 11 years of game calling.
He has 19 1/2 sacks and, obviously, a huge shot at breaking STRAHAN'S record of 22 1/2 for a season. The QB smashing might be a bit skinny this game, though, because we never pass and rarely go on seven-step drops. Plus, CHRISTIAN is pretty adroit at eluding the pressure, so the hope is he runs away from this JJ Watt, the NFL's best defensive player.
Down Houston way they call him JJ Swat because of his 15 passes defensed, which leads the team. Yep, more than the corners, who have been thrown at a fair amount. New England coach BILL BELICHICK practiced the week up to demolishing the Texans by having CAPTAIN COOL throw over and around guys using tennis raquets because that's how imposing JJ's pass-breakup skills are near the line.
He also leads the Texans in tackles, which is an indicator he's very good against the run. My Lord, how does one get around this beast and win a game one desperately needs? You cannot hoist the white flag and avoid him all game because he moves all over the place and plays very freely and fast.
Despite the gaudy numbers -- he also has 33 TFL's -- I say we do what we do and run ADRIAN right at him. We constantly put physicality in his life and attempt to cause fatigue to the seemingly indefatigable. Might not work but if we truly have the best run offense in team history attacking their best player and showing we are not afraid might be important.
You can run on the Texans and it's not like we are dealing with the '85 Bears here; Indy just went for 124 on the ground and VIC BALLARD amassed 105 rushing yards on them. Granted, the Texans most likely did more to defend the pass versus ANDREW LUCK than they will Christian, but we have seen the most elaborate of exotic run defenses the last two months, and none have slowed our beast or the men in front of him mashing for profit.
What I hope we do to wear down JJ Watt involves rookie "search blocker" RHETT ELLISON and a tectic the team employed in the San Francisco win. They had Rhett almost solely focus on DE JUSTIN SMITH, a JJ Watt type. Ellison banged on him all game and Smith became so frustrated at one point he wanted to fight. Just keep sending our aggressive rookie TE at JJ Watt and let him sacrifice his body for the good of the team. Pound and pound and pound and take the battle to him. Bring it and define to all of Houston (a) it has a problem and (b) this is who were are and what we do. And when we hit you stay hit.
This is the biggest game we have had around here in nearly two years and I know we are up to the task if we just play Vikings' football. LESLIE set this thing up to wear down the adversary in December, and with the ruinning game, the defense and special teams it's going great guns.
