TOM BRADY, our beloved Captain Cool with the New England Patriots, gets it. He re-did his deal today and accepted playing for far less than the market value for one of the best two QBs in the game. He did it because his team keeps getting close but needs salary-cap money to plug holes and discover a Super Bowl-winning mix. Captain Cool must be sick of playing the regular season for dough and the playoffs for show.
And due to 'Cool's generosity the Pats will gain around $15 million extra to spend this offseason. After hearing that I started thinking about PERCY HARVIN and where he will go before the draft if indeed SPIELMAN decides to move him. That move by Brady indicates he wants to give back to make his team better and may covet Harvin to replace WELKER as the slot guy with whom 'Cool will finish his career.
Percy is a tougher cover than Welker these days, returns kicks and runs the ball. He'd give the team a better chance to win the Super Bowl than Welker at this stage of their careers. The Pats currently own picks 29, 59 and 91. Not sure 59 and 91 would be good enough for me to give them Percy Harvin, and they just may be desperate enough to give us 29. That's what I would ask for to start the conversation.
From a gut-feeling standpoint I do not feel Harvin would be satisfied playing for us during the final year of his deal but might do so for BELICHICK and the Red, White and Blue of Immortality. Just guessing here. If that's the case and NE gets an assurance from Percy's people he'd give his all during the contract year, yeah, I'd want that first-round selection.
Enigmatic ways or not, Percy Harvin has proven to be one of the most explosive players in the game, and I'd tell the Pats for us to set you up with Percy and 'Cool we'd like your first-round selection. If not some combo that involves at the worst a second this year and next.
The other team I would call if Percy Harvin indeed is on the move would be the San Francisco 49ers. Not totally comfortable setting up a Super Bowl-caliber team with the best slot player in the game, but, again, if they feel he has to go, he has to go. San Fran. is stacked this draft and owns picks 31, 61, 74 and 93. We already have five of the first 128 picks and that would have to become markedly better if Harvin changes teams.
The Niners could more than use him to complement a great running game, CRABTREE, MANNINGHAM and VERNON DAVIS. We would complete their offense and make them favored to get back to the SB, and in knowing that we absolutely would have the right to ask for the cliched king's ransom.
Wish I had more of a concrete opinion on whether the team will peddle Percy but I don't. I'd love to see them work out whatever issues may have emerged so he can stay here, but if they trade him I absolutely will support the move and will know the damage done was beyond repair and he had to leave.
