Today on the 'Feast ELITE FOOTBALL MIND PAUL CHARCHIAN called CHRISTIAN PONDER'S 2012 season "incomplete," and I think that's a fair way to analyze it. He was brilliant against San Francisco week three, awful at Seattle and Green Bay middle of the year, efficient down the stretch and spectacular in the playoff-clinching win against the Packers.
Then, of course, he couldn't take part in the postseason game at Lambeau due to a throwing-arm injury. Yep, all of that leads to an incomplete grade, something with which I have no problem. He was starting games for the first full season of his career, our receiving group was below-average -- especially when JEROME SIMPSON hurt his foot - and PERCY HARVIN missed almost half the year.
The serendipity from Percy's ankle was ADRIAN received markledly more touches and we learned he couldn't be stopped. We also learned our offense is tailor-made to run it like that, and we will run as well or better next season.
So, hopefully enter GREG JENNINGS via free agency, JARIUS WRIGHT in his second year, Simpson telling 9-to-Noon his goal is a 1000-yard year and a couple of cool wideouts via the draft and an "incomplete" will be possible to achieve for our QB next season. The belief is after the first round we own a guy like PATTERSON, AUSTIN, ALLEN, HOPKINS, WOODS or whichever top-shelf WR The Architecht covets.
Add RUDY to the mix and all of that puts CP in a position to manage the game, get explosive, not have to force it into weird spots because receivers aren't getting open and stuff like that. Christian was the 12th overall selection of the 2011 draft. It's go time off his first full year as a starter and the game's best running back, which gives the play-action game merit.
Vikings' brass expects better, I expect better, teammates expect a leap - likewise for fans -and so does Christian. The game will come more naturally to Christian Ponder next season, and maturity generally leads to that to smart kids like him. His work ethic is tremendous and he should have better guys to whom he will be throwing the ball.
I very much hope we find a way to bust the get-young-stay-good theme a tad with Jennings and draft the hell out of the WR group, finding skill guys up and down the sucker. I am excited for the draft, the mini-camps, training camp, the preseason and Ponder 2013, a year in which we will make the playoffs.
