I am quite happy to have been wrong with my predicted offseason plan for Our Favorite Football Team. After we lost at Lambeau and the season was dead I went to begging for us to chase WR GREG JENNINGS, stealing him from the hated arch rival.
Then as the offseason set in, we went to the combine, I thought about it frequently chilling in SoCal and free agency began, I throughly was convinced we would not get "splashy" in free agency this season and instead would save all the chips for next year.
Greg Jennings is a Minnesota Viking, the reported promised money is $18 million and I am elated. This is exactly what I wanted them to do but didn't think GM RICK SPIELMAN would bust the theme this year. He did and we as fans all are better for it.
So, PERCY is gone and in turn we now have Jennings and all that Seattle currency. Everybody with whom I have chatted indicates Jennings is the ultimate team guy, so even though he is not as versatile as Harvin the guess is the team will have fewer behind-the-scenes problems. And a healthy Greg Jennings still can bring it on the field. He and a healthy JEROME SIMPSON give us a deep and intermediate passing game we lacked last year. It also provides QB CHRISTIAN PONDER a fair chance to eliminate the incomplete grade he earned last year.
What led to Spielman closing on this Jennings move and busting the theme? My guess is given they had the money to spend, he's a veteran but not nearing the end of his career, we plucked him from GB and desperately needed a wideout all factored in. The "theme" to get young and stay good still is in play, too, because we have two first-round picks, an extra seventh and Seattle's third next season.
We can win the division next year. We have the best OL in the NFCN, a running game that is unstoppable and four guys currently under contract in Jennings, Simpson, WRIGHT and RUDOLPH who can catch it. I am very, very excited. Plus, we now don't have to draft a WR with one of the first-round picks, but I still think we might.
We need help at MLB, DT and CB and with six selections through the first four rounds absolutely can fix that. The MLB spot needs to be addressed early, and I wonder if MANTI TE'O is in play at 23 or 25? With no WINFIELD in the mix for now we for sure have to find a couple of CBs and I'd like Rick to investigate DE given JARED ALLEN makes a ton of cash and is nearing the end of his career. EVERSON GRIFFEN played very well last year but is not a 70-snap guy.
Even though it didn't go as I predicted fans should be overjoyed with Spielman's approach to the offseason and feel fortunate owners like the WILFS forever are willing to spend to improve. Seriously, ADRIAN got a $100-million deal, Jared is due like $17 million this year, GREENWAY got paid and likewise for SULLIVAN. They, too, kept the Minnesota Moving Company in tact by giving PHIL LOADHOLT a new deal.
These owners pine to win games and get to the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl next year is in New Jersey, the state whence they come. Hmm? Can't make a Super Bowl prediction just off the Jennings signing but if we draft well like we did last year, Adrian does his thing, Ponder improves and the kids grow up in a hurry we can win the division and make the final season at Metrodome one of the most memorable ever.
