We celebrate the 1983 Wayzata Club Hockey Team and one of its stars, Jonny "The Mouse" Mikkelson, who once told me "Our team was so good the varsity wouldn't play us." When asked why he didn't play varsity Mouse said, "Too little." Cutest ever. So, we salute the greatest Club Hockey Team ever, a squad so vaunted even Jim Craig's Miracle team wanted nothing to do with it. Trottier, Bossy, Gretzky, Messier ... dead! Long live the 1983 Wayzata Club Hockey team!

f the Wild were Judge Charles H. Older, the judge that sent Charles Manson to the clink: “2 weeks in the workhouse and 1 month probation!”
MARVIN GAYE, one of my game's best (old-school soul music), and a chill for your Wednesday. Others to YouTube include "Let's Get It On," "What's Goin' On," "Distant Lover" and "Inner City Blues." And rumor has it there may be a Gaye Tribute night at a Minneapolis spot in April and featuring a long-time member of the Love Covenant singing some songs. If that's the case, "I can't wait, I can't wait until ..." that show.
Long-time besty DAVID KOOB (Poopy Dave), a local criminal defense attorney who looks like a cross between JASON TAYLOR and SAM CASSELL, texted me today, wondering if I was headed to the Wolves-Lakers game tonite. I told him I was off to the Wild game and he texted, "wht has hppnd 2u? pen box shws, hot strk, bndwgon, my God! it's kobe, man. u hv chngd!"
I have changed but not forever. There is room for mega Wolves and Wild chatter 9-to-Noon, but it's tough to mix in the Wolves - a forgotten team by many - when the Wild is the cat's ass, TUBBY gets fired, need to speculate on potential new hire, the NFL draft is a month away and the college-hockey teams either are winning or are trying to win title. The Wolves have won two consecutive road games by at least 20 points and it matters little because the playoffs were lost months ago. Diseased.
SPANISH KID - lo siento, mi amigo. No tengo tiempo para Pablito! I love Ricky Rubio and love watching him play. And I love watching Kobe, still one of the real cold-blooded bits going. But after a day in the 'Box and devoting so much time to the equity of a team that just may make a Stanley Cup run, it's tough to have an equal-time scenario.
I have attended more Wolves games this year than Wild and always in my heart will be an NBA guy. I know more about the history of the game and better get the nuances of the sport. This hockey thing, though, is pure and fun, and I genuinely am enjoying MIKE YEO's radio-show inclusion and leadership on the bench. It's not to the stage where we text all the time because he's not lonely like DENARD - IALTO! - but maybe one day, and he is doing an awesome job with the Minnesota Wild.
Tonite is tricky in my estimation; We have won six consecutive and the Coyotes have lost six in a row. These speedy 'Yotes are like 5-0-1 the last six at the X and have to be amazingly desperate. We are one of the game's hottest teams, are healthy and NIK BACKSTROM is on one of the great goaltending rolls in team lore.
ZACH PARISE'S game at Dallas the other night was that of domination. He managed a three-point game, scored twice and every shift he was on the team dictated tempo and mashed on the Stars' zone. He is so freaking complete, is as good on the forecheck as you'll see, dives all over the place to make plays and has been worth every dollar the Wild paid him.
I hope we win but for some reason I am envisioning a one-goal meatgrinder and maybe a slight regression to the mean for us. Seriously, we have won six in a row by at least two goals. That has to come back to the pack a tad one of these days. And with the Kings and Blues on the schedule the next week winning in regulation tonite is needed. Vancouver leads our division but also has played two more games.
The Wolves have lost 21 consecutive to the Lakers, and the last time L.A. was here it posted up LUKE with Kobe all game and absolutely destroyed us. The Lakers are enigmatic but capable of beating us by 10 or more any game.
This season for the Wolves has been a total buzzkill due to the injuries, and the prospect of Rubio with LOVE, PEK, AK47 and maybe VICTOR OLADIPO if we can draft him is funky fine. SHVED, BUDINGER and WILLIAMS off the bench and maybe their second of two first-round picks contributing and next year will be markedly better.
When the Wolves are good the town is on fire. Back in '03-'04 when the team made the WC Finals Erotic City was abuzz and full of sports-loving Rubes. Likewise for St. Paul when the Wild is good, and that's right now.
So, beloved Poopy Dave, my love for the Wolves, Kobe and the NBA still is in my heart, but X marks the spot for tonite's bandwagon.
