MINNESOTA SWARM’S EVAN KIRK NAMED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kirk set a franchise record on Saturday for longest streak without allowing a goal
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The National Lacrosse League (NLL) today announced that Minnesota Swarm rookie G Evan Kirk has been named the Week #13 Defensive Player of the Week.
Coming in cold off the bench for starter G Tyler Carlson in Edmonton and trailing 8-4 in the second quarter last Saturday, Kirk held the Rush scoreless for more than 37 minutes of game time, including the entire second half. Kirk stopped 25 of 26 (.962%) shots faced and the only goal that he let in was the overtime winner for Edmonton in a 9-8 loss.
“We put Evan in the game in place of Tyler, who was having a tough night, and that’s what goalies do, they feed off each other and pick each other up when they’re down. That was completely evident when Evan went in and shut the door on Edmonton,” head coach Joe Sullivan said. “He allowed us to get our feet underneath us and did everything that you would expect a goalie to do coming off the bench.
“I’m proud of what Evan and our defensive unit did to allow us to get back in the game.”
The 37 minutes and 17 seconds straight with no goals allowed set a new franchise record. The previous mark was set in 2008 when G Nick Patterson held the New York Titans scoreless for 36 minutes and 16 seconds to open the game. Kirk became the first Swarm goalie in team history to hold an opponent scoreless in the second half. Kirk’s .962% save percentage also set a new franchise high for an individual game (minimum 25 saves).
Prior to facing Edmonton, Kirk turned away 38 of 53 shots in a 15-10 defeat to Calgary at Treasure Island Field the night before.
Wednesday’s Defensive Player of the Week award is Kirk’s fourth award this season. Kirk was named the Rookie of the Month for February and has won Rookie of the Week honors twice in 2012.
The Hobart College graduate currently leads the Swarm in save percentage (.807) and goals against average (9.94).
The Swarm (5-7) plays its final road game of the 2012 season this Friday, April 6 against the Philadelphia Wings (7-5) at 6 p.m. CT. Fans can tune in LIVE on the NLL Network by visiting NLL.com.
