In the true spirit of last night's NBA draft, CBS sports set out to discover which NBA general manager was considered to be "the best" drafting GM in the league. Unfortunately for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the same study also highlighted the worst GM in the league.
The study was based off of a unique ranking and scoring system created by it's writer. The scoring system is set up to justly reward those who didn't screw up a top pick -- and also gives credit for nailing a selection later in the draft. The GMs also needed to have a minimum of five picks to qualify.
It won't surprise Timberwolves fans too much to find out that our very own general manager, David Kahn, finished in dead last place. In fact, Kahn barely avoided a negative ranking (which was possible).
Looking back at Kahn's track record with the NBA Draft, he was given every chance in the work to succeed including four top-10 selection since taking over in 2009. In all reality, the only pick of Kahn's 9 career selections to have panned out has been Ricky Rubio, and even that positive was delayed two years. Remembering the impact (or lack thereof) made by Kahn's other selections (Jonny Flynn, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, Nick Calathes, Herk Noel, Wes Johnson, Lazar Hayward, and Derrick Williams), leaves little to be wondered as to why Kahn was named the league's worst drafting general manager.
In fairness there is potential that 2011's #2 overall selection Derrick Williams and 2012's pick Robbie Hummel can still save some respect for Kahn's draft record. But it should be noted that Kahn's closest competitor at the bottom of the list (Chris Wallace, Memphis) is almost double the value that Kahn has earned.
