Chat: Marcus McCauley

camp is just three days old, but one rookie has already
forced everyone to pay attention. His name is Marcus
McCauley. And he's a wheelin', dealin', gamblin' sonofagun,
looking for a job at nicke back. He's jumped routes
on Brooks Bollinger. He's jumped routes on Tarvaris
Jackson. And if you aren't careful, he might jump in
front of you in the Cub Foods checkout aisle.
we drafted him we felt like he was a guy who had playmaking
ability," said Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier.
"He's flashed it early on in these first three
practices, so he's kind of validated what we thought
about him as a player. We envisioned him being a factor
in our third down package and really helping us as our
third corner. So far he hasn't done anything to disappoint."
had a poor senior season at Fresno State. He failed
to record an interception, and he was benched for five
games because of poor play. But Frazier and the other
coaches looked beyond the numbers.
I got to know Marcus," said Frazier, "I just
sensed that with that athletic ability, and that size
and speed, and the fact that he's a good person, and
if we can coach him in a proper way, we can get the
most out of him. We haven't played a game yet, but we
really feel that we got a steal."
is currently in a battle with Dovonte Edwards for the
nickel back job. At the moment, McCauley is taking nearly
all the reps.
from being a good football player, Marcus is a genuinely
cool guy. If you scrounge through the Sludge
& Lake podcast archives, you'll find Marcus'
first interview after OTAs (5/29). He talked about football,
blackjack and Lindsay Lohan. Marcus has a laid-back,
cool demeanor with a quick wit. I had a chance to chat
with him for a few minutes this weekend.
Mackey: Leslie Frazier said it's an open battle for
nickel back position right now. But you have taken the
most reps. Is your goal strictly nickel back, or do
you have other goals in mind?
McCauley: It's not necessarily just a position. Every
time I go out there it's just to show up. Just to flash
my talent out there. It's not really a position, whether
its corner or nickel back. I'm just out there trying
to make plays.
You have the label of "risk-taker", which
means you like to jump routes. We've seen it a handful
of times where you've picked off passes, or nearly picked
off passes. Is "risk-taker" a fair label?
Yeah, I'd say so. The biggest thing at corner is winning
more battles than you lose. Sometimes you have to go
with your instincts. I feel like I'm a very smart player,
and I recognize things before they happen. The biggest
thing is me trusting myself all the time. It all comes
with trusting your instincts. All the great players
trust their instincts.
What percentage of being a corner back is mental, and
what percent is physical?
We've all got little tangible things we have to work
on, but if you're not smart and you don't see things
before they happen, and you don't have an idea of what's
going to happen, that slows your game down.
You've been at training camp for three days now. On
a scale of 1-10 how much do you hate it?
Aww, I love training camp man! It's just being around
all my teammates and playing football. I've never had
this many fans out watching practice. I mean, I like
it. I can't complain about it, I'm a rookie and I haven't
even played in a game yet. So far training camp has
Do you have a roommate in the dorms?
Yeah, Rufus Alexander. We were roommates back at OTAs
Did you pick him?
No, actually he picked me. Before, I guess he like me
as his roommate, so he requested me again.
Would you pick him?
Sure. He's a quiet guy. But he lets me use his computer
all the time. We get free internet in the dorms.
Do you get cable?
Yeah we have little TV in there. We like to make a little
noise every now and then.
Can you keep the TV on past curfew?
MM: Well, curfew is at 11. But we don't usually go to
sleep until 12:30 or 1.
Does it piss you off that practice starts at 9:00, and
you have to miss Regis and Kelly?
I don't really watch TV. I really don't.
I watch sports and music videos, but I don't know what
that Regis and Kelly stuff is.
Yeah right. You know who Kelly is.
OK, I know what it is. But I'm not going
to own up to it
I ain't going to say I watch that
You're from Sacramento. You went to college at Fresno
State. It's hot here, but what's it like back at home
Man, this is lovely right here compared to California.
A little breeze. There's none of this out there. No
breeze. You'd be lucky to get a breeze in California
Do you have a place picked out? Or are you staying in
I got me an apartment about a month before OTAs. I wanted
to get that out of the way. I'm in the process of getting
my parents a home back in Sacramento right now.
Whats the first big personal purchase you plan on making?
A plasma TV or something?
Nope. I already bought myself a Range Rover Sport 2007,
so I'm good. That was my dream car, so I got that out
of the way.
